Good points Bob. I was just trying to use what I thought I'd have with me in a survival situation and sand definitely meets that criteria so I'll try it again with sand. Fact is I always keep a wire saw in my little survival kit anyway, but its always good to have options. Hank

Just discovered your blog and this interesting experiment. I certainly see the value in a DIY wire saw and have been thinking about it after reading your article. I don't have any "snare" wire yet but I did have a thought on perhaps improving the results of this DYI project, that is, try adding sand between strokes of the saw to see if the sand/wire combination would provide enough grit to improve performance. Another option is to try metal shielded wire and sand. The braided shielding may provide enough of an increase in surface area to trap more of the finer grit to help remove more wood per stroke? Just my $0.02.

excellent post... in the woods i'm not real fond of rifles because of the range, believe it or not i am most comfortable with an over/under or a single shotgun. to me the less moving parts the less chance for problems, and you can reload faster than you think, mine is well worn and breaks open and ejects the shell at the touch of the lever and a guick jerk of the stock and it closes up tight. i allways have a spare shell in my left hand. the savsge .22 mag/20 gua. over/under was my favorite gun awsome reliability a little heavy though.

Sgt. John, go to www.remington.com click on the tab that says News and Resources. You will get a dropdown menu. Click on downloads. Middle left of the page that comes up says "Owners Manuals" Click on that then select 770. It's a pretty big pdf file, something like 12.6megs. It's free by the way.
